Just Like Natural Teeth

Implants

Dental implants have revolutionised the way that missing teeth are replaced. They are now regarded as the most effective solution to replacing one, multiple or all missing teeth.

The loss of one or more teeth can have a significant impact on everyday life and self esteem.  However, with modern dental implants and advanced techniques replacements are natural, highly aesthetic and long lasting enabling you to look and feel your best.

There is now no need to accept gaps in your smile or live with loose ill fitting dentures.

Why replace missing teeth?

Apart from the obvious reason of aesthetics, missing teeth can and should be replaced. Replacing missing teeth not only restores the appearance but also allows you to function normally and eat whatever you like without fear of damaging the adjacent teeth.

Implants will also prevent adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap and opposing teeth from growing into to the gap, a phenomenon called ‘over-eruption’. Once these movements occur they are notoriously difficult to treat and can lead to bite and functional problems.

Replacing teeth as quickly as possible will prevent the above processes from starting therefore avoiding these potential pitfulls.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are artificial roots that serve as a replacement for missing teeth. They are made from titanium, which is biocompatible and does not trigger any allergic reactions. The surfaces are specially designed to allow fusion to the surrounding bone, a phenomenon called ‘osseointegration’.

Once this has been achieved, the new tooth, bridge or denture can be attached. These replacement teeth are completely bespoke and are produced to meet your individual needs.

The uses of dental implants
Single teeth require just one implant for replacement. The major advantage of this is that the adjacent teeth do not require grinding down for a dental bridge, which is highly destructive. Bridges are also fixed together which means floss cannot be passed down adjacent teeth as with an implant crown.

Multiple missing teeth are ideal for implant replacement either with individual crowns or implant supported bridges.

If all teeth are missing, then an implant supported denture may be the option of choice. Even the best fitting denture requires significant coverage of the mouth which can affect taste and ability to eat. Often denture adhesive is required to keep dentures in place. Implant supported dentures are clipped in using special locators and do not require as much coverage of the mouth.

Another option for completely missing teeth is to have implant supported fixed bridges, which cannot be removed.  Many denture wearers are self-conscious about the need to constantly remove and replace their denture and in this situation dental implants may offer the ideal solution. With careful planning (see below), this can be achieved on the day or soon after implants are placed called ‘immediate teeth’.

Planning
Careful and meticulous planning is crucial in dental implants. We are now able to ‘virtually plan’ your dental implants via CT scans and highly specialised software to ensure the best positioning, bone quality and the avoidance of nearby anatomy.
